Working together to reduce waste and encourage more sustainable consumption across the Highlands.

BSCC has a long-standing commitment to waste reduction and recycling. In 2022-25 we were one of eight community groups across the Highlands chosen to be involved in the Highland Community Waste Partnership.

We worked with local businesses and communities across Skye and Raasay to establish a range of waste reduction initiatives. We organised a host of events such as repair and composting workshops, climate cafes, clothes swaps, a sustainable business event, and film nights. We also delivered a number of education workshops and produced learning resources which can be downloaded from this page.

With additional funding from Circular Communities Scotland’s Share and Repair Network Tourism Fund we ran a pilot ‘Green Shed’ initiative at Camping Skye in 2024. The project trialled ways to encourage campsite guests to share resources through a reusable containers scheme and mini resource library.

The three-year Highland Waste Community Partnership project was dedicated to reducing waste and promoting more sustainable consumption as part of Scotland’s Net Zero climate emergency ambitions. It was coordinated by the environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful.

The project focused on three key areas of waste: Food waste and composting; share & repair instead of buying new; and packaging and single-use items. Tune in to Radio Skye to hear our Project Officer Janet Ullman talk about waste reduction.

Project legacy has included purchase of a glass crusher and cardboard shredder which are now being used by Camping Skye and the Growers Hub. Waste glass from the campsite will be used in paths and other community groundworks.

How to get involved

This three-year project has now come to an end but if you have any ideas for waste reduction initiatives or events in your area please get in touch.
