Spring is on the horizon so why get stuck in to some fun and healthy outdoor volunteering? Help us grow trees, improve biodiversity and develop Broadford Community Woodland for people and for nature.
How do I volunteer?
From 5 Feb we’re running practical volunteering sessions 10am – 2pm on Thursdays – everyone welcome and no experience necessary. We are also planning to run volunteer activities at other times, depending on people’s availability or interests.
To register your interest and/or sign up for the volunteer monthly newsletter please get in touch with Project Officer Phil Knott: phil@broadfordandstrath.org
What will I be doing?
We have a variety of tasks depending on the weather and the time of year. This will include:
- February: Paths and trees. We will be creating rough access paths into the woodland – continuing the excellent work done by our volunteers before Xmas – and checking on previously planted hedges and trees.
- March / April: Tree planting. With trees generously donated by I Dig Trees and the Woodland Trust we have around 900 trees to plant before the middle of April! We also plan to plant the first trees from our very own tree nursery. This will build on the success of the tree planting at our Community Woodland Day last November.
- March / April: Tree nursery. Early spring is also a busy time for our Community Tree Nursery as we start to get our beds and tree cells ready and start to sow and care for seeds. This work is based in the Growers Hub polytunnels and tree nursery area.
- April onwards: We will be starting biodiversity monitoring in the woodland to create a baseline of what natural history we already have on site, and organising a programme of events.
Some of the work is physical and on rough terrain, but other tasks are less physically demanding. Phil will discuss the work with you beforehand so we can address any access issues and ensure that tasks are appropriate to people’s levels of fitness and abilities.
