Pilot project at Camping Skye to promote sustainability, sharing and reuse.
The Green Shed is a pioneering initiative by Broadford and Strath Community Company funded by the Share and Repair Tourism Fund. It is dedicated to promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship within our beautiful community. Situated at the heart of the Camping Skye in Broadford, The Green Shed serves as a hub for innovative projects designed to enhance the camping experience while minimising our ecological footprint.
The pilot project currently comprises two initiatives:
Reusable Pizza Boxes & Containers Scheme: In collaboration with neighbouring cafés and shops, we can provide campers with durable, reusable pizza boxes and containers. This initiative aims to drastically reduce single-use waste associated with takeout meals. Campers can enjoy their pizzas in eco-friendly containers for free and simply return the boxes to the shed to be cleaned, fostering a culture of reusability and environmental consciousness.
Mini Resource Library: This ‘library of things’ offers a variety of tools and resources to enhance people’s camping experience. From tent repair kits and head torches to nature guidebooks, our library encourages the sharing and reuse of resources, reducing the need for individual ownership. This initiative not only supports sustainable camping practices but also enriches people’s connection with nature. Also available in the ‘library of things’ are BBQs, lanterns, binoculars, trekking poles etc. These more valuable items come with a small one-off fee of £5 that covers the use of any of these throughout campsite guests’ stay.

Broadford and Strath Community Company successfully secured funding from Circular Communities Scotland’s Share and Repair Network Tourism Fund. Zero Waste Scotland has commissioned Circular Communities Scotland to administer the fund and BSCC are delighted to receive money for one year for a project to help grow sustainability in tourism in our area. The aim of the fund is to use share, repair, or reuse to open possibilities for a more circular approach; reducing the consumption of new goods; avoiding the purchase of goods for single use; and effecting behaviour change.
The project is spearheaded by the Skye & Raasay Highland Community Waste Partnership (HWCP), an initiative managed by BSCC to help reduce waste within our community.
The funding grant of £23,562 will enable us to implement a pilot project at Camping Skye aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and enhancing the camping experience with this environmental initiative.
